About the Interceptor™
The Ballona Creek Interceptor™ 007 is a solar powered trash collection system designed to capture floating plastic, litter, and debris before they reach the ocean. Developed by The Ocean Cleanup, the Interceptor™ uses floating booms to guide trash toward the front of the device, where a conveyor belt automatically removes it from the water.
The system operates with two booms that form a V-shape during rain events to funnel debris efficiently. During dry weather, the Interceptor™ alternates between a two-boom and single-boom setup to maintain access to Ballona creek.
Community First Approach
Community engagement and education are key aspects of the Interceptor™ project. Several outreach events were held by Public Works to answer questions and share information about the Interceptor™.
Three educational signs are installed around the project site to inform visitors about the Interceptor™, the Ballona Creek Watershed, and the impacts of stormwater pollution. Public Works continues to maintain an open line of communication with stakeholders and the community to support ongoing public awareness and involvement.
Location
The Interceptor™ is located near the mouth of Ballona Creek, downstream of the Pacific Avenue Bridge.
